Dr. Valerie Massey is a chartered clinical psychologist and neuropsychologist with extensive experience in clinical psychological, neuropsychological, and psychoeducational assessment, school-based intervention and consultation, and teaching and counselling children with learning disorders and other special needs. Dr. Massey is a member of the College of Alberta Psychologists, the Canadian Association of School Psychologists, the Canadian Psychologists’ Association, and the National Academy of Neuropsychology. She also holds Diplomate status with the American Board of Psychological Specialities in Forensic Neuropsychology and the American Board of Disability Analysts. In the course of her doctoral studies, Dr. Massey completed coursework in specialized neuropsychological and personality assessment from the University of Alberta’s Department of Educational Psychology, in addition to doctoral coursework in the Department of Elementary Education. She has also taken advanced neuropsychological assessment training in the United States from Dr. Ralph Reitan, Dr. Arnold Purisch, Dr. George Hynd, and other eminent scholars in the fields of neuropsychological and clinical assessment. Dr. Massey maintains an active interest in working with the families of special needs children, adolescents, and adults.
Dr. Massey has completed an interdisciplinary doctorate in the Departments of Elementary Education and Educational Psychology at the University of Alberta, specializing in the assessment and diagnosis of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and other alcohol-related disorders in children, adolescents, and adults.
Dr. Massey is currently in private practice and holds many government, school, and corporate contracts for service delivery in the areas of psychological assessment and consultation, including school psychology and child and adult neuropsychology. She provides instructional workshops on issues related to special needs populations, both for children and adults, and has presented widely at provincial and national conferences. She has also conducted province-wide training workshops on children and adults with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome/Effect for the Alberta Drug and Alcohol Commission (AADAC) and for other community-based and government groups. She is a member of the Capital Health Care Authority’s Committee on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and is also a member of the Alberta Medical Association’s FAS Practice Guidelines Review and FAS training committees. Dr. Massey is a clinical supervisor and instructor for graduate students in the Department of Educational Psychology. She is also an adjunct professor in the Department of Educational Psychology, at the University of Alberta. She has been granted expert witness status in clinical and consulting psychology at the level of Family Court and the Court Of the Queen’s Bench.
